My daily experiences, joys and challenges in motherhood and being a mom of 3rd culture kids…

Road Trips

We just came back from a 10 hr. road trip from Malaysia. It’s really not that long to travel from Malaysia but we had to stopover for 2 hours in my Hubby’s hometown at the middle of the trip.

Our kids are used to travel by land. But no matter how many times we travel by land in a year, road trips are not always a pleasant experience. There will be times when they will be too cranky or times when they will be too restless. Pleasant road trips of course when they behave nicely, play peacefully or be sleeping all throughout the journey ( I wish!). But as a family, road travels are our time to bond together. These will be the times when we sing songs loudly in the car, play ” I spy”, have some countdowns when reaching the tunnels or bridges, crack jokes and just be silly with the each other.

All these times are truly precious for I know that the kids will grow up fast and in a blink of an eye be leaving home and be away for their studies or marriage (?). LOL! I know that’s way to far ahead, but my point is, I’m trying to cherish all these times with my li’l ones.

Hard To Say Good Bye

It was hard for my li’l girl to say good bye last night. I guess she will never get used to the fact that friends and family will not be with us forever. I mean, I we already had our countless of good byes for many years. People come and people go.. we visit places and leave after a few days or months. She did shed some tears in the past but maybe as she grows older, she longs for a friend who’s also a girl and of her age.

Last night, after we sent our friends to the bus station, she cried so hard and was telling us that she wants her “ate Ria” ( her friend). We had to explain to her that she has to go back to their place and be coming back soon. I thought she was over it when we came back home. But when I was putting her to sleep she cried and cried holding the thing that her Ate Ria gave her until she fell asleep.

I can’t help but feel sad for her too.

Travelling At Three Weeks Old- Part 1

I gave birth to my first child in the Philippines. I could have always given birth in Malaysia (inĀ  my Hubby’s place) or Thailand ( where we are based) but then it was my first delivery and I wanted to be home with my immediate family. My father was also diagnosed with cancer at that time so, I wanted to spend more time with him.

So, I traveled with my Hubby on the plane to the Philippines at 7 months in my pregnancy. Of course, I brought my Doctor’s letter and was allowed to board the aircraft. And because of our work in Thailand. My Hubby had to go back to Malaysia for work.

He only came back in time for my delivery and brought back our li’l baby back to Malaysia at 3 weeks old.

15 days is actually the minumum age for a baby to travel on an aircraft but we just gave it a week allowance since it seems so pitiful for our baby. Our Dr. even suggested that we can wait for the baby to be a month old but then due to my Hubby’s work, we had to go back immediately.

..to be continued
